Share your keyboard and mouse without a KVM switch

I just bought a logitech wireless keyboard and while looking for KVM switches found out a sad fact : WSynergy Logoireless keyboards/mouses dont always work well with the KVM switches! I was disappointed since I had also bought two monitors for my two laptops and wanted to share the keyboard between those.  I was rescued by Synergy / Synergy +.

I first downloaded the 2006 release and it instantly worked. Needless to say I was thrilled and immediately looked for the next release and realized that there have been none since 2006. Synergy was a open source project by Chris Schoeneman, but unfortunately it had been discontinued since 2006.  On further research I found Synergy +, the Synergy re-vitalized.

Here some of the benefits of Synergy over a KVM switch:

Try it and let me know your experiences with it and if you know of any other software capable of achieving this, please leave me a note.

Wordpress 2.7.1

Wordpress 2.7.1 is released. It is NOT a security release but a maintenance release so you can take your time to update it. Wordpress 2.7 has “auto-update” feature which can be used to update automatically (we just did and it worked painlessly). Just make sure to backup your database before updating.

The full release article can be found here Wordpress 2.7.1

Free Mind Mapping Software alternatives

What are the free / open source mind mapping softwares available

Mind Mapping Software

A mind map is a great tool to brainstorm, visualize and classify ideas or concepts.  There are two kinds of mind-mapping software available – online and desktop application. I researched through the various online mind-mapping software but found them to be lacking and NOT free enough to be considered as a free solution for this blog. So until I find a mind-mapping online service which is as good as the desktop applications available out there, I will concentrate only with the desktop applications. Here is a list of alternative mind-mapping software:

Freemind: Freemind is my favorite mind-mapping software. Not because I have really compared it with others, but because I was introduced to this software a few years ago and am so used to it. The features it provides are probably the most I would ever need. It is written in java, hence it is cross-platform and is available on windows and any other ‘nix environment. Released under GPL

VYM (View Your Mind): VYM is written in java so is slated to be platform independent. However, currently it is not available for windows, but is available for MacOSX, Linux, OpenSuse etc. Released under GPL

VUE (Visual Understanding Environment): VUE, an open source project started at Tufts University is focused on providing tools for teaching, learning and research. Apart from standard mind-maps vue also offers extensive features such as – Arranging content inside a node for presentation, in-depth exploration, interactive zoom, tagging of nodes etc. This is a great tool for teachers/researchers and even presenters. Written in Java, the tool is cross-platform and available for download for windows and various ‘nix platforms. View is distributed under Educational Community License v2.0.

XMind: Xmind is another great open source software for creation of mind-maps. It comes with a great feature though, it offers the possibility to upload mind maps and then download them. So although you dont get the freedom to create the maps online on the fly, you may use it to keep your maps updated online.  It is licensed under GPL.

Mikogo : a no go for me

Mikogo is a free software for online meetings. The philosophy being you can have online meetings by sharing your desktop.

I tried it and so far have had pretty bad results with it. With 2-3 meetings I have had with mikogo, although the speed was pretty good, the frequency of disconnection was very high. It is even more frustrating if you are trying to remote control someone to help them out. They get the impression that you dont know what you are doing. A troubled person looking for support is already at the brink of anger, multiple requests for joining different meetings, because the connection keeps dropping is just icing on the bad cake.

The software has some pretty good features, but seems to be lacking in the most important aspect – constant connection till the meeting is done. Like when asking someone to join a meeting, they are asked to download an exe – doesnt generate a lot of trust in the users.

Uninstalled for now.

I have been using yuuguu with quite success although the speeds for mikogo did look faster than yuuguu. I think with the promise Mikogo presents, its fair to say that it can do better and hopefully the next version addresses some of these problems.

Gimp : An image editing alternative

I dont have money to buy photoshop, is there a free alternative?

The answer is GIMP. Gimp is an open source image editing, creation software widely used in linux platforms and is also available in windows. The strength of gimp comes not only from its basic features which are very much in league with adobe photoshop for a simple webmaster or web user, but also the wide range of plugins available for it. Since Gimp is open source, the plugins are developed by the community and are free (you may find an odd paid plugin).

The plugins provide so much strength that gimp can easily be used as an alternative to commercial softwares adobe photoshop, corel draw, paintshop pro. Although some people do suggest that gimp may not provide professional level of finesse which the commercial software provide. But for my usage, I have found gimp to be quite sufficient.

Some of the coolest plugins for me:

Watermark

Aqua Bou

Free email clients and softwares

So I dont have Microsoft Outlook. Is there a free alternative ?

Thunderbird : Solution from Mozilla labs, it is one of my favorites. Can be configured for pop3 and imap. Quick to setup and I really like the simplicity of the whole interface. Unlike outlook, it doesnt have integrated calendar, but calendar application can be downloaded from Calendar project page. The calendar can be integrated with the application.

Foxmail : Since the website is in chinese, I couldnt really test it out in real time.

Dreammail : [The website has been down for quite a few days so I havent really checked it out. If this continues I will remove this from the list]

Evolution :  [Linux only]

Courier :

gmail : My personal favorite apart from thunderbird. You can configure it to receive pop and imap emails. You have integrated google docs – keep your work online, download as PDF etc, integrated google calendar and much more. I think it also allows you to login via https connection. Although it is really a commercial solution (ads and all) , they dont interfere really with work and I really like the option to open the documents in google docs, edit them and download or resend them. Document sharing becomes easy as well.

Free and open source blogging software

So what are the free and open source blogging options?

My favorite is obviously wordpress (this site being created on that). But competition is the mother of progress, so here is a list of free and open blogging solutions available (reviews later). Although content management systems also provide blogging capabilities, I am listing only those which are primarily blog publishing softwares and are available for free download and install:

PHP / MySQL Based

- Lifetype (open source)

- Movable Type (open source)

- b2evolution (open source)

- Inktype (open source)

- Wordpress (open source)

Java Based

- Roller (open source)

- Pebble (open source)

- Thingamablog

.NET / ASP based

- Dasblog (open source)

- Presstopia (open source)

- BlogEngine (open source)

Others

- Typo (Ruby)

I probably will never get to testing and reviewing of all of these, but if you have experience with any of these please do let us know.

How to display a drupal block in a node

How to display drupal blocks inside a node (story)

I have been using Drupal for a long time now and havent really been able to achieve this. But it seems it is as simple as finding out the block number (here its 26) and then just insert the below code. Make sure input format is pho code, otherwise block wont work.

<?php
$block = module_invoke(‘menu’, ‘block’, ‘view’, 26);
print $block['content'];
?>

Note: If you make an error while inputting this php code your drupal install may break, so make sure you try it on a test install first. To recover, go to phpmyadmin and find this text and remove from the node. That should get you up and running again.

My favorite top ten wordpress 2.6 plugins

My favorite 10 wordpress plugins for a started website

I love top 10 lists. I am a fan of wordpress, so here are the top 10 wordpress plugins I suggest as must for any starter website:

- Who sees ads : Money making plugins first! Who sees ads is a very robust plugin which allows you to create simple text inserts for different adcodes / banners. Ad code could be anything adsense, yahoo or any banner. Just insert this text into your post html (<!–my google adsense text add –>) and you get your ads in your post. Has options to disable the ads for the admin to avoid accidental clicks.  It has built in adsense checker so in case you put more than 3 adsense units on a page, it will automatically not-show more than three. More details on the plugin home page.

- Platinum SEO pack or All in one SEO pack : Both do almost the same thing – give you a chance to increase SEO by inputting an exerpt and keywords for your post. Platinum SEO is built upon All in One SEO and gives you few extra options to add combination of follow, nofollow, index, noindex to the URLs in your post. Must have plugins for SEO (just install one of them not both).

- SEO Smart links : This plugin is just that Smart! Its a known fact that one must provide reference to older blog posts in the newer once. But often bloggers forget or are just plain lazy. Once activated and configured, it provides links to your other blog posts in all of your blog posts. Result -> readers can jump from one post to another with the reference. The links can be provided by tags, titles, categories etc. You have control of total number of links that show up, whether or not you want your comments to be converted, even if you want to show externatl links for certain keywords. Extremely helpful to increase the readability and keep the readers hooked.

- Similar posts / recent posts : This is one of the first plugins I install on any of the wordpress site (for myself or for a friend). Why? Simply because it adds to wordpress publishing capability by giving readers an opportunity to read other interesting “related” posts on the blog. The installation is slightly involved for a novice user since it needs a small change to the theme (loop), but upgrades are a breeze. If you see right below this post you will see Similar Posts in red, and thats a result of this awesome plugin.

- Sociable : Social bookmarking helps SEO and sharing of your blog posts with other users. Sociable provides you with a quick list of atleast 50 social bookmarking websites (you can choose which ones). So the readers can just bookmark their favorite posts to their favorite bookmarking websites. And yeah …. why dont you try it out by bookmarking this post ;)   use one of the bookmarklets below the post.

- Wordpress.com stats : I like the way wordpress.com provides quick stats. I have found them accurate and really helpful. A quick glance at the dashboard gives the hits and search engine queries. It needs you to get a API key from wordpress.com (its free).

- Wordpress threaded comments : Threaded comments is just that – comments in threaded form with the option of receiving email when you receive a reply. It is great to club the conversation together and to notify (by email) the commenters when you reply to their comments.

- WP Security Scan : One of the newer security plugins in the wake of the 2.5 redirection hacks. I hope this plugin keeps updated to the latest discovered wordpress vulnerabilities. I strongly recommend you to have this plugin and run it every week or so, just in case.

- Login Lockdown : Records IP of failed login attempts on wordpress and also denies brute forcing into your wordpress. If you are someone who keeps their password rememberable (like a dictionary word), you may really want this plugin to safeguard yourself.

Once you have some good traffic, I strongly suggest the WP-Cache plugin for performance.

I am looking for some really good language conversion / translation plugins.

But so far my trial has been bad with a couple that i tried. My rankings in Search Engines dropped probbaly due to duplicate content. So I am still looking. Any suggestions ?

Free screen capturing , demo creation and tutorial creation tools

How can I create a quick tutorial for my team mates by capturing what I do on my desktop ? Are there any free tools to achieve this?

Really speaking the well developed and free screen capture tools (for windows) are very limited. This seems to be one of the areas where open source resolution hasnt really kicked off. BUT, there is always hope. While I have been looking at FREE tutorial creation, demonstration and screen capturing tools which can be alternatives to products like Camtasia, Adobe activate are rare. But here are some of the tools I came accross and I liked.

  1. Wink

  3. Camstudio

Best free and cool internet browsers – my favorites

Ever wondered how to browse the net faster? What is the best browser?

A lot of the windows users get stuck with Internet Explorer. Firefox is the most popular “other” option. Apple users use Safari and are quite happy with it, but I believe that for an average internet user or blogger the other following free options can fare better than all of the above. But we are ill informed, there are quite a few free browsers which take the cake for an internet user. Here is a list of them (review follows):

Best free web conferencing, web meeting, online collaboration alternatives with VOIP

The features I give very high priority in a web conferencing tool are:

- VOIP: International attendees cant pay bills for long distance calls. Integrated VOIP to rescue!

- Zero Install: Most of my attendees are non IT people. Installation just makes it that much more difficult for them.

- Whiteboards: I like to use my cyberpad to write stuff on whiteboards during presentation. Makes people understand faster and they feel connected when they see something happening on screen.

- Change Presenter / give control: Especially when its a collaborative work and my remote colleague wants to present a portion.  Also when an attendee has a doubt, they can just take the mic and speak rather than typing their doubt in chat window.  Helps interaction.

When  I started writing this post, I had a list of about 20 different “supposedly free” web conferencing Read More »

Drupal released 5.9 and 6.3 versions as security updates

On July 9, 2008, Drupal released versions 5.9 and 6.3 fixing some of the security vulnerabilities found in the code. Apart from the security vulnerabilities it also fixes some of the bugs that were reported.

Here is a question – what be the version of next release in 5.x series? 5.9 is out ..and 6.0 has been out a long time back. [edit: Duh! I was thinking math :) ... the next version is 5.10 .. simple ]

DimDim Vs Wiziq : The free web meeting , conferencing and online classroom tools

DimDim Vs Wiziq : Web conferencing, Online meeting, Virtual classroom ….

As a presenter, I have used both the web conferencing tools on the offer – Wiziq and DimDim. I found that both the tools have quite amazing features apart from being free… well for most part! Here is a small comparison based on my experience with these tools and a bit of constructive criticism:

Wiziq:

Wiziq’s target audience is teachers (Virtual Classroom). But it can be easily used for online conferences and meetings just like webex or go2meeting. The tool itself has very academic look and features the most common web conferencing solution features. My favorites being the ability to record the sessions for self or for attendees and multiple whiteboards. My few trials with wiziq have been quite satisfactory, but there are some glaring inconveniences I had to face. First the positives: Read More »
