Cuil : Free search engine and google alternative

Cuil Search Engine

Cuil search was launched today and claims to be “the worlds biggest search engine”. The search engine aims to index pages based on relevance and content. On the web Cuil is being hailed as “next google” although the first few searches (that we did) reveal vast differences between the two, but not in favor of Cuil.

A search for the word “free web conferencing” [without the quotes] resulted in all kinds of web conferencing software while only DimDim made it to the front page. No sign of Vyew or Wiziq or Yugma. Apparantly the sites which did picture in had the word “free trial”. A google search resulted in atleast 3 of the above free tools.

A search for the phrase “dimdim vs wiziq” resulted in no real discussions or articles comparing dimdim to wiziq. While on the google, atleast top 3 articles presented the relevant topics.

Two great things I liked about Cuil:

- Their presentation (column view) of results is much better than google’s list view. I seem to browse quickly through the results rather than scroll down. This may not be taken very well with everyone because quite a few people are used to the list view.

- They dont retain your search habitsĀ  => complete privacy

- Drill down and tabbed search recommendation. Their drill down is quite nice. They also provide tabbed view of recommended search terms – an awesome feature as well. Although I am still to hit a search term (of my liking) which gives me that.

Check the features page for more. The cuil Obviously, this is a new engine, so we should to give Cuil more time to adjust to the www traffic and improve. We will be waiting and watching with enthusiasm.
